Fearful Of Outbound Linking? Don't Be a FOOL

I was writing an email to one of my network partners today and as I was requesting a link I noticed her website did not have a single outbound link on it. I started thinking about terms to describe a situation where a webmaster / web marketer is so greedy with links that they won’t link out to anyone, regardless of relevance to their site or their visitors. Link Paranoia or Link Greed were the first two to spring to mind but then my brain threw an acroymn at me:

Fear of Outbound Links or FOOL

I searched Google for Fear of Outbound Links +FOOL and didn’t find squat on the first page so I’m claiming it. Anybody got a problem with that?

Had another one come to me over lunch…

How about FAIL (or F*CK ALL INBOUND LINKS)?

Linking out’s probably one of the best ways to get links back. You should see the link policies some sites have, stuff like requesting permission to link to them (serious). People are funny, now where’s my link (lol).

Hey Ben, thanks for the comment. I agree, it’s pretty hard to approach someone for a link if you’re not willing to give up some love in return. Besides which, if you’re pointing links and sending traffic it’s a great way to get the attention of other webmasters who may then be more inclined to link back whether you ask them to or not.

I’ve also got a pretty strong feeling that linking out to sites within your topical niche helps to establish your own site as topically relevant.

I’ll give you a call soon so we can sit down and make a plan for throwing links at each other.

[...] post pages, the former was a free-for-all link bonanza where I was able to get a link to my FOOLish play on words simply by asking for one. The latter links look like a good bit of strategy by the Wake Up Early [...]
