SEO: Career or Skillset?

Here’s a comprehensive article on Search Engine Marketing (SEM) careers.

It contains a lot of relevant information relating to the skills and resources required in order to pursue a career in SEM. The article makes heavy use of referencing and lists numerous links to useful sites as well as providing an outline for preparing interview questions and responses.

I found it through a comment on this article over at SEO Chat where the author was raising the issue of whether SEO should be considered a career in and of itself or as a skill set to be included in a broader Marketing portfolio. I’d say that access to quality automated tools and info products means the barriers for business owners to take SEO inhouse are steadily being eroded.

The saturation of Information Marketing educational products signals to me that an increase in access to employees with knowledge of SEO is already occurring. The supply of labour is increasing faster than demand for services. To this end, employers (particularly small business owners) could argue that much of the benefit of SEO can be achieved in far less time than a fulltime role. Common SEO tasks that constitute the 80/20 of results can be automated or outsourced cheaply if you shop around or find a reliable, up-to-date source of information. Greater access to multiskilled job applicants also allows the possibility of combining the administration of SEO campaigns with other roles, such as Web Development, Graphic Design, Marketing and Administration.

I’m not a big fan of crowds and I don’t want to invest too heavily in a career that can be cheaply outsourced. Consequently, I’m of the opinion that my fascination for education should shift from developing my SEO talents to complimentary Internet Marketing and broader Strategic Marketing skillsets.

What does this do?

4,320,000 ways to “Increase Blog Traffic”

Posted on March 29, 2007

As my faithful readers (and by that I mean myself - Joe O’Brien) will know, I have not been in the blogging game for very long. I began my career as an Online Marketer just over a year ago and focussed mostly on learning as much as I possibly could about search engine optimisation. I tend to research pretty hard whenever I’m faced with a new challenge and as a result I managed to sniff out thousands of articles on the topic of SEO, most of them absolute crap. While I now consider that to be largely a waste of time it has at least taught me a bunch of things about how search engines work and how to quickly find relevant information. This post is about my quest to find as much quality information as I could, in a relatively short amount of time, on how to increase blog traffic.

Step one (1): I went to my faithful friend, overlord and master Google and queried increase blog traffic. The result? As the title suggests, the Holy G served me up a veritable banquet of delicious bullcrap to sift through - 4,320,000 results to be approximately exact! As if I was gonna play that game, I needed to tighten my criteria…

Multiple Wordpress Categories

The sidebar widget that I installed yesterday seems pretty rad so far but I still haven’t configured the sidebar of my project blog the way I want it. Apologies for not providing a link to the blog in question but it’s top secret and confidential blah blah blah. That’s not even to mention it looks like a bucket of crap and is not fit for human (or robot) consumption just yet.

Righty-oh, the problem I’ve got is that I want to have more than one categories widget on my sidebar. This is so I can tag individual posts with items from category A and category B. It’s likely that an any post could be included in many instances of Category A but will only ever have one Category B property <<Edit: What a load of crap, each article will need to be associated with multiple A’s and B’s - I’m still figuring this stuff out…>> . That doesn’t even make sense to me so I’m not sure if you, the random surfer, will have much chance of understanding it. Nevertheless, I maintain to this point that I only have one reader and that’s yours truly, the honorable Joe O’Brien.

So far, I’ve thought up the following possible solutions but I can already think of a couple of reasons why these won’t work;

Learning about Wordpress

As the title suggests, I’ve been spending a fair bit of time lately learning about Wordpress. More specifically, I’m learning about the variety of themes and plugins that have been developed by the Wordpress community and freely available to use and modify for your own purposes. Of particular interest to me is figuring out how to modify the themes to suit the objectives for the blog I’m working for my employer and then later for blogs of my own. Despite the fact that there are hundreds of layouts available I’m yet to find one that really fits with my intentions. Therefore, I’m gonna have to put my developer hat on and get in and hack about until I get it right.

First off, baby steps. Before I get into the nuts and bolts of editing themes I’m going to try out some easy things first in order to get a feel for the structure of a Wordpress blog.

I’ve been reading blogs for almost a year now and for some reason I haven’t felt compelled to grow one of my own. I guess that’s probably due to fear on some level although I’m not exactly sure what it is I’ve been afraid of - I’m getting off topic but I’ll definitely be revisting this issue in the near future.

Anyway, I was talking about easy things I can do to get familiar with Wordpress and the fact that I’ve been reading other blogs for a while now. The point I’m trying to get to is that I’ve observed these other blogs and noticed aspects and features that I would like to be able to use on my own blogs. So, without further ado, I’m going to install my first plugin…

Heading on down to old Melbourne town

I’m heading down to Melbourne today for the World Internet Summit which I’m hoping will be a four day information assault on my Internet Markety brain. It’s more likely to be 30-50% selling dreams and products to IM n00bs (not that I’m a grizzled veteran by any means). In itself, that’s not such a bad thing as it’ll give me an insight into what uninitiated business people are looking to get out of the internet as well as how to sell stuff to them.

A good chunk will be devoted to networking and finding out what other folk are getting up to. I’ve already arranged to meet up with a few people and it’ll be interesting to see who else will be there.

I should have access to the net whilst in Melbourne so if I get the time and the inclination I’ll use this blog as a journal of the going’s on of the Summit as well as what it’s causing me to think and feel. I anticipate my brain will start spinning early on and it’ll probably take a good two weeks for it to whir down to a normal level of agitation.
